Sharing Knowledge and Skills: My Experience Teaching Hands-On Workshops at Fresno State

This past year, I had the incredible opportunity to teach two hands-on workshops at Fresno State for the university’s Marketing Club. Both workshops focused on practical skills in digital content creation, an area where I have spent much of my career. It was a rewarding experience to engage with enthusiastic students, helping them sharpen their skills in Adobe Premiere and Adobe Photoshop, two essential tools in today’s marketing landscape.

October 2023: Crafting Website Cover Reels with Adobe Premiere

The first workshop took place in October 2023 and was centered around Adobe Premiere, a powerful video editing software that is a staple in the industry. The focus of the workshop was to teach students how to create engaging video reels that could serve as cover reels for websites. With video content becoming increasingly vital for online presence, this was an important skill for aspiring marketers to master.

During the session, we walked through the entire process of creating a website cover reel—from importing footage to adding transitions, effects, and sound. Students had the opportunity to work with real footage, experimenting with different editing techniques to see how they could enhance their videos. By the end of the workshop, each participant had created a polished video reel, ready to be used as a dynamic cover for a website.

What stood out most to me was the students’ eagerness to learn and their creativity in approaching video editing. They quickly grasped the basics and were excited to push their projects further, experimenting with various effects and transitions. It was inspiring to see them take the tools I introduced and create something uniquely their own.

April 2024: Designing Mock-Ups with Adobe Photoshop

The second workshop, held in April 2024, shifted focus to Adobe Photoshop, another essential tool for marketers, especially when it comes to visual content creation. This time, the task was to create a mock-up of a government-issued card, a project that could be used in program literature both online and in print.

This workshop was particularly interesting because it combined technical skills with an understanding of design principles. Students learned how to use Photoshop to design a realistic and professional-looking card mock-up, covering everything from choosing the right fonts and colors to adding textures and shadows for a three-dimensional effect.

As we worked through the project, I emphasized the importance of detail and precision in design work. The students practiced layering techniques, learned how to manipulate images, and explored the use of smart objects to create a versatile and editable mock-up. By the end of the session, each student had produced a high-quality mock-up that could be used in a real-world marketing campaign.

Reflections on Teaching

Teaching these workshops was a fulfilling experience, not just because I got to share my knowledge, but because I saw firsthand how these students could apply what they learned in a practical context. The hands-on nature of the workshops allowed them to gain confidence in their abilities and understand the importance of these tools in the marketing industry.

I’ve always believed that practical, hands-on learning is one of the most effective ways to master a new skill. These workshops at Fresno State reinforced that belief, as students were able to create tangible, professional-grade projects by the end of each session.

As I continue my work in digital marketing, I look forward to more opportunities to share my experience and help others develop their skills. It’s always rewarding to see how a few hours of instruction can spark creativity and build confidence in the next generation of marketers.
